Helping
to get occupational therapists,
teachers, parents, and the rest of the educational team
on the same page regarding sensory integration is often
easier said than done. Many teachers and parents are
simply not aware of the important role sensory integration
plays in child development. Because children, adolescents,
and some adults with special needs often don't
have the language to describe their stress-filled reactions
to many experiences, professionals and parents need to
be able to read their bodies for clues. This workshop
is designed to help all involved set up better learning
settings and curricula to support the innate desire to
learn. Anyone working with children must understand that
the first teachers of the brain are the skin, muscles,
joints and gravity receptors and that the body sets up
the brain for learning and recall - thus the workshop title:
Minds, Movement and Memory.
After taking this course you will:
• Fluently
describe the principles of sensory integration which influence
child development and learning using parent and teacher friendly
examples and language.
• Recognize
the behavioral cues of children and others indicating
sensory motor discomfort/dysfunction and know what to
do about it.
•
Develop and implement activities for the classroom reflecting
an understanding of the principles of sensory integration
as they apply to curriculum and environments.
•
Be able to provide educational opportunities for parents
and teachers to increase their understanding of the important
sensory integrative foundations for children's
learning.
