Description:
With
"No Child Left Behind" having led our schools
to sacrifice physical activity for more seatwork and
testing, there has never been a more important time to
apply the principles of Sensory Integration to the classroom
setting. This is a workshop designed for teachers, parents
and occupational therapists interested in teaching others
ways to get these developmental ideas into every classroom,
not just special education settings. Nikki and Lee will
share their ideas for introducing the basics of sensory
integration into school settings via consultation, focus
on individual students, parent-teacher organization meetings,
in-services, demonstrations and workshops for faculty
and parents, using language common to all folks. Using
these themes:
1. Schools as a community of learners;
2. Going from top-down to bottom-up models of learning;
3. Understanding sequencing from the Suck/Swallow/Breathe
Synchrony to remembering the proper sequence in long division
and beyond;
4. The First Teachers: Skin, Muscles, Joints and Gravity
5. Recognizing Interhemispheric Integration as the basis
for learning with understanding;
The
speakers will share ideas, activities, and models for
teaching this information. The workshop will incorporate
the principles taught - moving from listening to speaking;
from sitting still to moving, with discussion offered
as much as possible.
