Gravity & Movement Challenged:
The Sensory-Motor-Vestibular Triad

12 Contact Hours
Steven J Cool, PhD, FAAO
Eileen W. Richter, MPH, OTR, FAOTA

Much attention has been focused on vestibular function since the work on sensory integration in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Because the vestibular system is powerful in its influence, it is often regarded as a primary culprit in dysfunction and the primary source for treatment. But studying the vestibular system and its function without due consideration for its place within the context of the sensory motor system leaves the practicing clinician with an incomplete picture of how and why its influence changes function.

This course explores the developmental neurobiology of the vestibular system's central role in cranial nerve, brain and spinal cord intercommunication. We show how this foundational organization along with the sensory motor system supports higher level functions such as self regulation, coordinated movement and functional behavior. Participants will experience movement activities and evaluate the differences in gravitational demands that may impact their clients.

After taking this course you will:

• Recapture the basic principles of vestibular and sensory motor
foundations of movement and integrate those with a more updated
understanding of how the nervous system organizes information.
• Take away an ability to integrate modern principles of nervous system function into current practice.
• Gain an appreciation for clinically relevant multi-dimensional intervention strategies for sensory(-motor) dysfunction using a variety of equipment (simple to elaborate) and activities (with minimal demands to more complex demands).
