Description:
This experiential workshop invites experienced therapists to explore vestibular-visual processing in greater depth. Participants can expand their clinical reasoning skills and therapeutic strategies for working with clients who demonstrate vision and other sensory processing and motor control challenges through several different learning experiences. They will engage in a review of a vision screening and learn how to administer additional tests that were not included in the basic vision screening examination. Observation of OT/VT in action will be provided by a live demonstration of one or two children being evaluated and co-treated in a clinic setting by an occupational therapist and a developmental optometrist. Videos of children receiving therapy for various issues will help to insure that visual and vestibular deficits can be comprehensively evaluated and ameliorated through collaborative assessment, critical clinical analysis, and optimal intervention strategies. Recent research will be cited to support the information provided in this workshop as well as suggested readings for further study.

Participants MUST have taken the two-day course: From Eyesight to Insight: Visual/Vestibular Assessment and Treatment, as this course will build on information presented in the earlier course. Participants are encouraged to review their previous course handouts and notes prior to attending this workshop.

Suggested Audience: Experienced OTs, PTs and SLPs who have taken the Eyesight to Insight course and who work primarily with diverse pediatric populations.

This course is offered for .9 AOTA CEU's

Objectives: Participants will be able to:
1. Demonstrate four vestibular-ocular reflex tests and describe the contribution of each of these reflexes to functional performance.
2. Demonstrate three balance tests.
3. Give two specific examples of how VT and OT, PT, or Speech can collaborate on a given client so as to optimize therapeutic outcomes.
4. Describe a visually guided sensory integrative activity for each of the following therapeutic strategies: 1) Adaptation 2) Habituation 3) Substitution.
5. Identify symptoms suggestive of poor saccadic fixations, lack of peripheral awareness, and inability to sustain attention on a task requiring near-far focal attention.
6. Describe three signs and/or symptoms that require immediate referral to an optometrist.
