Often
when we look at sensory processing, we forget that the
postural foundations that are present or not present,
can offer us clues to the nervous system. Using the Sensorimotor
Performance Analysis (SPA) as a guide, participants will
take a closer look at postural outcomes that often accompany
poor sensory processing/integration. The SPA is a criterion-based
observational assessment that results in a quantitative
score for qualitative observations of posture. It consists
of observations and ratings for seven functional motor
tasks (four gross motor and three fine motor). Participants
will closely examine postural foundations through several
SPA tasks, and learn scoring procedures. The integration
of SPA scores with other assessments, and the use of
the SPA in measuring treatment outcomes will be discussed.
As a previous participant commented, “ I never thought
that a workshop on an evaluation tool could be so much
fun.”
Objectives: Participants will be able to
1. Use basic tenants in sensory integration, motor control,
and motor development to diagnose and identify sensory processing
deficits.
2. Identify postural foundations that result when the nervous
system is under stress (from decreased sensory processing,
and/or other considerations).
3. Demonstrate administration and scoring for a minimum of
four SPA subtests.
4. Describe the use of SPA scores as they pertain to treatment
outcomes.
5. Discuss a new tool with which to organize postural foundations,
and with which to prioritize and direct treatment in relation
to sensory processing and posture.
