Description:
This is a foundation course in how the vestibular system
serves as one's internal GPS, integrator of all
sensory processing which incorporates movement and balance.
Participants will be guided in understanding the design
of the vestibular system for perceiving, without conscious
attention, the precise, continuously changing orientation
of the head and body in space under all conditions. In
other words, it affords the ability to stand, walk, run,
and play safely, spontaneously, and adaptively while
performing all life tasks and roles. This frees the conscious
mind to problem solve, motor plan and execute all aspects
of cognitive function.
The vestibular system was little understood compared to
the five well-researched senses until the advent of space
travel. It is now revered as the critical foundation for
temporal-spatial orientation. This system supports adaptive
movement as well as visual and auditory processing while
meaningfully engaged in all life tasks and roles. Expertise
in vestibular enhancement is of paramount importance for
therapists because vestibular dysfunction is one of the
twenty-five most common reasons that individuals seek medical
attention.
This
course provides an introduction to and demonstration
of Astronaut Training, the Vestibular-Oculomotor Protocol
for moving, looking, and listening. Therapeutic movement
strategies, supported by sensory integration and neuro-developmental
principles, will expand the clinician's ability
to facilitate rapid, precise, integrated skill development
with clients through specific, playful, vestibular activities.
This
course is offered for .6 ASHA CEUs, Intermediate level,
Professional area
This course is offered for .6 AOTA CEUs, Intervention & Outcomes
Objectives:
Participants will be able to
1. Analyze and practice self-directed vestibule-proprioceptive
movements which prepare the system for tolerance of precise, comprehensive
linear and rotary acceleration.
2. Describe the Vestibular-Oculomotor Protocol
3. Explain new vestibular treatment strategies and related clinical reasoning
as a foundation for developing comprehensive, integrated sensory processing treatment
plans
4. Implement expanded treatment options with diverse populations of all ages
through analysis, adaptation, and integration of movement activities with all
of the other sensory systems.
