Using Infant Massage as a Therapeutic Tool
Nikki Rosen-Lieberman, MA, OTR/L
6 Contact Hours - Intro/Intermediate Level
This course is offered for .6 ASHA CEUs (Various Level, Related Area)
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The sense of touch is our first language. It is used to help find nourishment as well as to communicate expressions of feelings. It is through touch that we first feel love, caring and a sense of safety and respect. These feelings promote a sense of bonding between a child and their caregiver. It is here that relationships begin.
Infant massage has been used as a bonding tool for many generations and in many cultures. It is also been used as a therapeutic tool for “fussy” babies, colic, constipation or to ease the neuromuscular stress due to deformity and disability. Massage is soothing for both the giver and receiver, promoting a positive communication bond through touch.
This seminar will cover the developmental stages of the infant and baby ages 0-6 months, along with the use of infant massage as a means to impact the emotional and physical development of an infant, baby and caregiver. The various strokes will be demonstrated, practiced and experienced by the participant. How and where to begin using the techniques learned in this seminar will be discussed as well as outlining the certification process and requirements for future consideration. Infant and baby games will also be included as another means of play and engagement.
A list of required materials to bring will be included in your confirmation email. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a doll 18-22” long whose clothing is removable). Participants will be provided with massage oil.
Objectives: Participants will be able to:
1. Identify the importance of bonding, engagement, and attachment.
2. Recognize the appropriate amount and type of stimulation for a babies, ages 0-6 months.
3. Explain and experience infant massage strokes in a sequential manner for immediate use and practice.
4. Apply infant massage principles to “at risk populations” such as pre-maturity, colic, constipation, neurological involvement.
