Session K: March 2 (Friday)
Tools for Tots: Sensory Strategies for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Maureen Kane-Wineland PhD, OT/L & Susan Swindeman OTR/L
6 Contact Hours - Intro/Inter Level
This course is offered for .6 ASHA CEUs (Various Level, Related Area)

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Help is on the way for those who either have, or are working with tots (toddlers or preschoolers). This seminar is designed to offer practical sensory strategies to improve your tot’s ability to function in natural environments. When the question is asked, “Is it sensory or behavior?” reframe it by asking, “Are there sensory issues driving the behavior?” Tools for Tots offers a variety of ‘sensory safe tools’ which enrich sensory experiences for tots whose nervous systems are challenged (e.g. sensory processing disorder, autism spectrum disorder, or learning disorder). However, using these strategies will encourage optimal development in all tots, even those who are neuro-typical. These sensory ‘tools’ are used in naturally occurring daily routines in your tot’s home, child care center, early intervention program, or preschool. Topics include Hair Care, Tubby Time, Beddie Bye Bliss, and more! Learn how to help Touchy Tots, Busy Bees, Fumbling Tots, and Cautious Tots get along. Updates in sensory processing, treatment videos and case histories will be shared. Participants will also have the opportunity to do some detective work of their own. Dress comfortably to personally experience how movement can affect learning!
• Tools for Tots book: $18.00

Objectives: Participants will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a general understanding of sensory integration theory.
2. Identify characteristics of sensory processing disorder.
3. Apply practical sensory strategies to help their tots throughout their daily routines.
4. Develop ‘sensory safe’ environments.
5. Explain the importance of engagement.
6. Identify strategies to facilitate engagement.
