School Based Occupational Therapy Pt 2:
Are We Missing the Forest for the Trees

Cheryl Colangelo, MS, OTL and Molly McEwen, MHS, OTR/L
6 Contact Hours

This course is the second in a 2-part sequence and open to those participants who have taken Part I. This course focuses on facilitating an institutional "buy-in" for an expanded OT role in the schools. Participants will analyze their own satisfaction and effectiveness related to their current roles in school-based practice. Each participant will have the opportunity to develop a personal plan of action for facilitating change in the overall system with emphasis on expanding possibilities for students. Discussion and small group processing will be used to identify strategies for developing a more effective and satisfying practice, combining broader whole-person approaches with the strengths of the existing more traditional approaches. Come to this course for a healthy "shot in the arm" and fresh attitude regarding our unique and powerful role in the schools today and tomorrow.

This course is offered for .6 AOTA CEUs, Administration & Management

Objectives: Participants will be able to
1. Broaden and clarify the definition and philosophy of OT in the schools for educators, other professionals and parents:
2. Redefine the role of OT in proactive teamwork related to the practice of Response to Intervention (RtI);
3. Explore multiple forms of communication that helps parents, administrators and other professionals understand the unique role of occupational therapy; and
4. Describe concrete strategies for personally enhancing satisfaction and effectiveness in the workplace.
