Using
Unstable Surfaces in the Treatment
of the Pediatric
Patient Barbara

Contact Hours
This
course focuses on the use of gymnastic balls and other
mobile surfaces to promote development and function in
patients. Posture and balance reactions are evaluated
along with motor planning transitions and movement on
the ball. The new therapist will find the information
invaluable in helping to develop a repertoire of treatment
strategies based on a firm foundation of logical problem
solving. The experienced therapist will be challenged
to refine their skills and move away from their entrenched
techniques. Treatment strategies for weight shifting
and balance reactions on stable and unstable surfaces,
manipulating of center of mass, upper extremity weight
bearing, strengthening, endurance and co-activation will
be discussed. Videos of patient treatment will be used
to provide examples of the principles taught.

to lift into space as a foundation for movement control.
3. Describe techniques on stable and unstable surfaces
that promote work into the base and lifting or holding
into space.
4. Describe treatment techniques for weight shifting, mobility,
elongation, activity and control using the ball and other
unstable surfaces.
5. Describe two treatment activities that set up the environment
to create the need for the outcome being promoted.
